It was erected on the commission of the Marquis Ferdinando Pieri Nerli, who in 1859 entrusted the project to the architect Giulio Rossi. Following the death of the latter (October 1861) was completed by Giuseppe Partii. It constitutes a sort of anthology of the Gothic Sienese purist culture of the second half of the nineteenth century.
